LSC graduate joins the cast of Miss Saigon
LSC graduate Liam Marcellino has recently joined the cast of Cameron Mackintosh’s West End revival of Miss Saigon, playing an American GI in the ensemble and covering the part of Chris, the GI whose romance with Vietnamese bar girl Kim is the driving heart of the story. The new cast opened in the production at the beginning of May, and is continuing the successes of this award-winning revival.
Liam graduated as a member of Seedtime with a first class BA (Hons), receiving the Dame Anna Neagle Award on behalf of Cameron Mackintosh for the Student Most Likely to Succeed. Immediately after graduation Liam joined the cast of High School Musical – Live on Stage (Asian tour) as ensemble/Cover Troy. He went on to tour the UK in Dirty Dancing, Grease, and Priscilla Queen of the Desert before landing his first role in the West End in long-running hit show Mamma Mia at the Novello Theatre. Here he was a member of the ensemble and understudied the roles of Skye and Eddie.
Miss Saigon, based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly, opened in the West End in 1989. The original production of Miss Saigon ran for ten years and went on to be performed in 300 cities in 15 different languages. Mackintosh decided to bring his hit show back to the West End last year, its 25th anniversary year, in a brand new fresh production with an exciting international cast. In covering the role, Liam is following in the footsteps of fellow graduate Luke Evans, who played Chris in the 2004 UK Tour of Miss Saigon, as well LSC graduate and West End leading man Johnny Amobi, who was a member of the original West End cast in 1989.
The 2014 revival production swept the board at the 2015 WhatsOnStage awards earlier this year, winning a record-breaking nine awards from a possible twelve nominations. The show is now booking until February 2016, with a Broadway transfer in the pipeline within the next two years.
