We chat with the Artistic Director of INTOTO Dance about his life as a performer and teacher in the world of Contemporary Dance.

Edd Mitton is a London Studio Centre graduate who went on to a successful (and ongoing) career as a performer and choreographer in a variety of genres including ballet, musical theatre and contemporary dance. He has been a company dancer with Yorke Dance Project since 2014, and rehearsal director since 2019. In 2024 Edd featured in Dance Revolutionaries, a film by Yorke Dance Project, directed by Emmy-nominated director, David Stewart.

Edd has been a regular teacher and choreographer for the Contemporary Dance pathway at LSC during much of his performing career, working often with INTOTO Dance. In the 2024/25 Academic Year, Edd took on the role of Artistic Director for the company.

Where did you train?

London Studio Centre!

What was a formative moment growing up that made you want to perform?

I was always performing when I was little – putting on shows for my family! My Mum saw that I loved singing and dancing and so she played me VHS tapes of old Hollywood musicals – Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly – and it was those I think that really lit my passion.

What were some career highlights before you started teaching?

Before and alongside teaching…! Joining the cast of Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake was a huge dream fulfilled. I absolutely loved performing in Javier de Frutos’ production of Cabaret in the West End. Finally, although it nearly broke me physically, dancing in Martha Graham’s Errand Into The Maze felt like a very special achievement.

How have your career experiences influenced your teaching?

I’ve been lucky to work with some wonderful directors and alongside many very talented artists, who have taught me a lot about motivation, bravery and commitment. I try to channel that energy into my teaching.

What do you aim to bring to your respective company?

Rigour is important to me, but so is fun and playfulness. My job is always trying to find the right balance between the two. I hope my classes are the perfect mix of challenging and fun!

Can you give a hint as to what is in store from your 2026 company tour?

The joyful thing about having brand new works created each year is that I truly don’t know what to expect! There will be some beauty, definitely some full-bodied dancing, and hopefully a dose of something more wacky.

Do you have a proudest LSC moment you can share?

Presenting my first INTOTO show was a very proud moment. It’s very emotional to see dancers overcoming their boundaries, going further than they thought they could, and discovering their power as performers.

For any prospective applicant interested in Contemporary Dance, how would you advise them to prepare for Higher Education?

It’s a big change going from dancing a few times a week to full-time training, so it’s worth considering how to increase your physical work-load to prepare the body for a 5-day-a-week timetable. However, my main piece of advice is to see as much performance as possible – dance shows, films, television, opera! It all feeds the creative mind, and you never know when an idea might resurface.

How is LSC different from anywhere else you have trained or worked?

I love working at LSC. I find it so enriching to be surrounded by so much variety. I think there’s a real respect here for all the different aspects of the artform, and that is passed down to our students who develop a well-rounded outlook.

The 2026 INTOTO Dance tour is sure to be another poignant and aesthetic exploration of Contemporary Dance and a fantastic experience for fans as well as newcomers to the form. Keep an eye on our Events page to find out when tickets are on sale.
