Overview

The CertHE Dance and Musical Theatre is a full time, taught one-year programme for ages 18+ that provides you with a thorough grounding in key dance and musical theatre techniques, as well as a critical understanding of established skills in audition technique.

You will explore different styles to become versatile performers ready to audition for vocational training establishments. You will develop your knowledge of the different offerings available and learn to assess the suitability of these courses for you. You will also develop your understanding of the application process, ensuring you submit a strong personal statement and application.

The programme offers versatile foundational training in the technical and performance skills of ballet, contemporary dance, jazz dance and musical theatre. At the end of the programme, a final performance opportunity is offered to consolidate the holistic learning of the course and provide an opportunity to showcase your work and your progress.

This programme is quality assured by Middlesex University and you will receive a Middlesex award on successful completion.

Structure

The programme offers versatile training in ballet, contemporary dance, jazz dance and musical theatre from a specialist teaching faculty with wide-ranging and current industry experience. Performance opportunities are integrated into the curriculum throughout the programme.
One Year

The one-year CertHE provides a teaching cycle of two semesters, comprising four modules in total. This model suits the requirements of pre-vocational training, providing time for a thorough grounding in of a range of techniques throughout the year.

The modules available offer a training in dance technique (Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary Dance, along with body conditioning and an introduction to dance science), musical theatre audition preparation (song and monologue preparation along with Singing and Acting skills), application preparation and performance.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have:

  • Previous dance experience and an ability to showcase their skills within an audition
  • A minimum of two A-level passes*, plus three different GCSE passes of grade 4 or higher (Grade C if awarded prior to 2017) including GCSE English Language (or equivalent qualifications), and an accumulated minimum of 96 UCAS points
  • A-level Dance (desirable)
  • The level of health and fitness necessary to study intensively

Applicants who have non-standard qualifications (or who wish work or life experience to be taken into account as part of their application) will be considered on an individual basis, in line with the general aims and principles of Middlesex University’s Admissions Policy and within the terms of the Accreditation of Prior Learning policy (APEL).

If your first language is not English, you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent, with no less than 5.5 in each individual component, or an equivalent qualification.

We are unable to accept applications for deferred entry or defer offers for this course as applicants must retain a high level of fitness prior to enrolment.

*A-Level Equivalents: Normally, BTEC/UAL/RSL Level 3 qualifications, Access to HE Diploma, International Baccalaureate, Scottish Highers and Advanced Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving Certificate, Norwegian Vitnemål, German Abitur, Apolytirion. UCAS points from Graded Dance, Speech and Drama Exams will not normally form part of a formal offer.

Annual Fees

Tuition Fees per annum (Academic Year 2024/25): £9,250

Student finance is available for this course (subject to validation), covering up to £6,000.
